How can I recognise a credible mystery-shopping agency?
Practical checks for the agency, assignment, compensation, communication and handling of personal data.
Identity and contact routes should be verifiable
Check whether the agency or company is clearly named and whether a plausible business contact route exists. A professional-looking message is not proof on its own; sender domain, company information and assignment should fit together.
Understand the fee and reimbursement before accepting
A good assignment makes clear what fee is offered, which expenses may arise, what will be reimbursed and what conditions apply to payment. Ask before accepting if those points are unclear.
Briefing and deadlines should be specific
You should be able to see what is being assessed, when the visit may take place, which evidence is required and when the report is due. An assignment without a comprehensible task is not a good sign.
Be cautious with advance payments and unusual payment routes
Normal registration or allocation of a mystery-shopping assignment should not depend on paying an upfront joining fee or forwarding money for other people. Unusual payment instructions should be independently verified before you act.
Data minimisation is a quality signal
An agency may need personal information for registration, payment or a specific project, but it should be clear why each item is required. Passwords, one-time banking codes, complete account credentials or similar security details do not belong in a shopper profile.
