How much can you realistically earn from mystery shopping?

An assignment fee is not the same as an hourly rate
A job may quote a fixed fee, but your real calculation also includes preparation, travel, waiting, the visit itself, reporting and possible follow-up questions. The assignment fee alone therefore does not provide a reliable hourly earnings figure.
Travel and expenses can change the picture
Before accepting, check whether travel costs or required purchases are reimbursed separately, included in the fee or left for you to cover. A higher-fee assignment can be worse value than a smaller one nearby once time and travel are included.
Mystery shopping is not automatically predictable income
The number of assignments can vary by region, profile, season and agency. Mystery shopping should not be presented as guaranteed regular income. Only confirmed assignments should be treated as actual work when planning your finances.
Compare the total effort
A simple personal calculation helps: compare the realistic total time, including travel and reporting, plus your unreimbursed costs with the promised fee. This makes assignments easier to compare without being misled by one headline number.
